Riding the Rail Trails

Rail trails offer a great place to ride away from traffic.  A growing network of trails is slowly linking the Seacoast and the Northeast together.

The Rockingham Rail Trail is a local favorite and runs from Newfields to Manchester

The Granite State Rail Trail will run from Lebanon to Salem and is about two-thirds complete.

To our South there is a nice ride from Danvers to Topsfield.   This will one day connect to Newburyport.

The Coastal Trails Coalition is connecting Newburyport, Amesbury, Salisbury and Seabrook together.

The New Hampshire Seacoast Greenway will run from Seabrook to Portsmouth.  The State just finished purchasing the last section of this proposed trail. The Seabrook to Hampton Falls section is in the Ten Year DOT plan, but no date is estimated for construction.  Engineering and Design has begun on the stretch from Hampton to Portsmouth.  Construction is estimated to occur on this section in 2021 or 2022.

Once across the Memorial Bridge in Porstmouth you can follow the Eastern Trail signs all the way to Portland.  Currently the sections between Portsmouth and Kennebunk are on road.  After that the Eastern Trail is mostly off road all the way to South Portland.

Note that the rail trails from Boston to Portland are a section of the East Coast Greenway which connects 15 states and 450 cities and towns for 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida
